Otter Tail Power has completed the acquisition of a stake in the 150MW Merricourt wind farm in North Dakota from EDF Renewables.
The US energy company has issued a notice to proceed with construction of the project, which will start in August.
The build, estimated to cost $270m, will be tackled by an “affiliate of EDF”, Otter Tail said. Completion is expected in 2020.
The wind farm is located in McIntosh and Dickey Counties and will generate enough power for 65,000 homes when completed.
“We project that by 2021 our customers will receive approximately 30 percent of their energy from renewable resources we own or secure through power purchase agreements,” said Otter Tail Power president Tim Rogelstad.
“The Merricourt wind farm will be the largest capital project in our company’s history.”
EDF and the US outfit originally signed an agreement for the project in 2016.
