Vattenfall seeks Scottish wildcat officer

Ministers grant consent for Clashindarroch 2

Vattenfall is looking to recruit a wildcat project officer at its consented 77MW Clashindarroch 2 wind farm in Scotland.

The role will oversee the improvement of habitats at the site and help reduce interbreeding with feral domestic cats, the developer said.

It will also encompass educational work with local stakeholders on wildcat ecology, guided by a panel of independent experts, to which NatureScot will be invited.

The position will run for at least five years.

Vattenfall environmental specialist Robin Cox said: “We are looking for someone truly passionate about the future of the Scottish wildcat to fill this new role, which will be based locally in and around Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

“We design our wind farms very carefully, not just to reduce carbon emissions but also to help protect and enhance wildlife and nature.

“By creating new habitats and improving connectivity, the work intends to open up new areas for the Scottish wildcat to roam and breed.”

Earlier this year, conservation group Wildcat Haven launched a judicial review challenge against Scottish Ministers’ decision to approve Clashindarroch 2, arguing mitigation hierarchy had not been correctly applied.

The group is concerned over the impacts of developing the wind farm that will be sited adjacent to the operational 36.9MW Clashindarroch array (pictured), which it believes will damage wildcat habitats in the area.

The legal challenge was dismissed by Scotland’s Court of session in February and an appeal against that ruling was also rejected by judges earlier this month.

Wildcat Haven has said it is now reviewing the latest decision before deciding on next steps, which may include a further legal challenge in the UK’s Supreme Court.
