Vestas is to supply 56 turbines to Duke Energy Renewables over 200MW Mesteno wind farm in Texas.
The project in Starr County will feature 180-metre tall V136 3.6MW machines.
Construction is underway and the wind farm is scheduled to be operational by the end of the year.
Vestas sales and service division president in the US and Canada Chris Brown said: “We’re pleased to expand our tall tower technology and V136-3.6MW platform.
“The combination of taller towers and V136-3.6MW technology is perfectly designed to extract the abundant resource at the site, and deliver low-cost, reliable energy to the community and customer.”
Duke will sell electricity generated by Mesteno into the ERCOT market and will also enter into a long-term hedge agreement covering the majority of the expected production.
The project will be Duke Energy Renewables’ fourth wind farm in Starr County and increases the company’s overall wind capacity in the US to more than 2.5GW.
During peak construction approximately 200 jobs will be created, while over $16m in tax revenue will be generated during the first 10 years of operations.
Duke Energy Renewables president Rob Caldwell said: “We’re excited to continue to invest to build and expand renewable energy resources in Texas
“This project will deliver clean energy for the state and significant economic benefits to the area.”
Amshore US Wind provided development support for the project, while Wanzek Construction is the contractor.
