Turbine makers Vestas and GE are among companies that have submitted bids for a 100MW wind project tendered by the Uzbekistan Ministry for Energy.
The ministry received bids from 70 entities from 30 countries, which include international independent power producers and renewables developers.
Other bidders include Marubeni Corporation, Ming Yang, Acciona Energia Global, China Three Gorges, South Asia Investment, Scatec Solar, Enel Green Power, Total Eren and ACWA Power.
The ministry has published a full list of the bidding companies and consortiums on its website.
The tender for the project, planned in the Qorao’zak district of Karakalpakstan, will be held in two stages, including selective qualification and subsequent formal consideration of technical and commercial proposals.
Tender winners will be responsible for the development, financing, construction and operation of the new plant.
The 100MW wind project tender was announced on 16 April by the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade, and the Public-Private Partnership Development Agency under the Ministry of Finance.
The tender is part of Uzbekistan’s national energy strategy aimed at generating a quarter of all electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
The country will develop up to 3GW of wind capacity under the recently announced strategy to meet growing electricity demand with clean power.
Preparatory work at the 100MW wind project site has begun ahead of construction works.
There are also plans to build a second wind farm adjacent to the site of the first, for which a similar tender will be held in due course, said the ministry.
Uzbekistan deputy energy minister Sherzod Khodjaev said: “This wind power project is the first of an ambitious programme to not only meet an increasing demand for energy but also build a more sustainable and affordable energy ecosystem in Uzbekistan.
“We are delighted that there has such a positive response to the announcement of our tender for the new wind power project. 70 companies and consortia from 30 countries is testament to the continuing international investor interest in Uzbekistan and the positive FDI environment we are fostering here.”
