DP Energy has appointed Vestas and Downer as preferred suppliers to develop the first 375MW phase of the Port Augusta wind/solar hybrid renewable energy park in South Australia.
Danish manufacturer Vestas has been selected as the preferred supplier for the wind turbines and engineering firm Downer the solar component.
Vestas will also be responsible for the control system to integrate the energy production of the solar and wind components.
The project is scheduled to be completed in two phases with the first 375MW stage, comprising about 220MW of wind and 150MW of solar power.
Construction is expected to start in the second quarter 2018, creating up to 600 jobs at peak development.
DP Energy said the cost of the project is approximately $600m.
The second phase would add additional solar capacity and battery storage.
DP Energy chief executive Simon De Pietro (pictured) said: “Up until now we’ve been focused on proving the viability of the concept.
“The appointment of our preferred key contractors, Vestas and Downer, represents a significant milestone in the progression of the project.
“We’ve also secured the support of a lead infrastructure investor, which is very encouraging and further ensures the development of the facility.”
Meanwhile, Vestas has also signed a conditional agreement for the supply of turbines for a 300MW project in North America.
The Danes said more information would be revealed “if and when the project translates into a firm and unconditional order”.
