Vestas is developing a 166-metre steel tower for its 3MW turbines in the German market.
The first towers are planned for installation in Germany in early 2017, while certification is expected in the first quarter of next year.
The large diameter steel tower has been developed to enhance the economics of low wind projects.
Vestas Central Europe product manager Arne Dyck said: “The LDST tower concept brings decisive advantages, such as reduction in weight of the tower, effective transport, rapid erection and dismantling at low cost.”
