Vestas has launched a next-generation turbine platform called EnVentus with two models each with individual capacity over 5MW.
EnVentus will be available as 5.6MW V150 and V162 variants to cover low, medium and high wind conditions, the company said.
The turbines are designed for the onshore market, but may have offshore applicability, the Danish manufacturer said.
Vestas added that this is its first new platform introduction since 2011 and combines technology and system designs from Vestas’ 2MW, 4MW and 9MW turbine models.
The new turbines will be available globally, featuring full-scale converter, a permanent magnet generator and a medium-speed drivetrain.
Vestas said the V150 variant will have a swept area of over 20,000 metres squared and utilises the company’s existing 150-metre rotor.
The V150 will offer 30% more annual energy production (AEP) compared with the V136-4.2MW model, depending on site specific conditions.
A V150-5.6 MW prototype is expected to be installed in the second half of 2019, while serial production is scheduled for mid-2020.
The V162 model will offer 26% more AEP than the V150, depending on site conditions, and is primarily relevant for low and medium wind conditions.
It can also be deployed at high wind sites, depending on local conditions, Vestas said.
The first V162-5.6 MW prototype is expected to be installed in mid-2020, with serial production later that year.
The name EnVentus combines ‘energy’, ‘environment’, ‘invent’ and the latin word for wind ‘ventus’, the company said.
Vestas chief technology officer Anders Vedel said: “Vestas has pioneered wind energy since 1979and by introducing EnVentus and its first two variants, we connect heritage with innovation to underline our technology leadership.
“With the introduction of a platform built on advanced modularity, we increase our ability to provide customised solutions while ensuring value chain optimisation.
“I’m incredibly proud of everyone in Vestas who has been part of developing our new platform and variants, once again showing Vestas has the most passionate and innovative minds in the industry.”
