Vestas has installed and delivered first power from its EnVentus turbine platform prototype.
The Danish manufacturer said the V150-5.6MW prototype produced its first kilowatt-hour at the Osterild test centre in Western Jutland, Denmark.
The turbine stands 230 metres tall and will now undergo an extensive test and verification programme to ensure reliability before serial production commences, the company said.
Nacelle and blades for the prototype were developed and produced at Vestas’ factories in Ringkobing and Lem in Denmark.
Serial production is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2020 and type certification is expected early next year.
The prototype of the V162-5.6MW turbine of the EnVentus platform is planned for installation at Osterild in the fourth quarter of this year.
Vestas chief technology officer Anders Nielsen said: “This is a great milestone in our journey towards a fully modular product platform which enables us to meet customers’ increasing needs for customisation and continuous reduction of cost of energy.
“With an on-track prototype installation and an encouraging customer demand for EnVentus turbines, we demonstrate the benefits of our industry-leading investments in innovation and commitment to drive the industry forward.
This achievement is a testament to the dedicated work of the many Vestas employees involved.”
The Enventus platform was introduced last year and is the next generation of Vestas technology, building on and leveraging proven technology from the 2MW, 4MW and 9MW platforms, the company said.
