An Ontario judicial panel has ruled against Wpd Canada’s 55.35MW White Pines wind project.
The Environmental Review Tribunal found the wind farm would cause serious and irreversible harm to two species, the Little Brown Bat and Blanding’s Turtle.
Project opponents had appealed the Renewable Energy Approval granted by the province. The 2015 permit authorised construction of 27 Senvion MM92 2.05MW at a site in Prince Edward County.
The tribunal said Wpd may propose remedies to protect the species.
The developer, a subsidiary of Germany-based wpd Europe, is reviewing the ERT decision, spokesman Kevin Surette told reNEWS.
“We’ll work with our subject matter experts over the next few weeks to determine the appropriate remedy acceptable to both the director of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change and the tribunal,” said Surette.
A conference call between the parties will be held shortly to determine the next steps in the hearing process.
The Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator has agreed to buy the output from White Pines under a 20-year feed-in tariff contract.
