Xcel Energy has completed the 500MW Cheyenne Ridge wind farm in the US state of Colorado.
Cheyenne Ridge comprises 229 Vestas turbines and was built with the help of Mortenson Construction.
Xcel said the project, located in Cheyenne and Kit Carson Counties, was completed four months ahead of schedule.
Cheyenne Ridge is expected to generate about $107m in landowner payments and another $29m in new tax revenue over the life of the project.
Xcel Energy Colorado president Alice Jackson said: “I am incredibly proud of the people who had a hand in building this wind and transmission project, especially given the challenging year we’ve all had.
“Our construction crews, line workers and engineers had to make some adjustments to complete the project on time – and in doing so, they really raised the bar for operational excellence, and came in ahead of schedule and under budget.”
Xcel Energy project manager Jerry Kelly said: “It’s awe-inspiring to stand next to a wind turbine and understand the wind in your hair is driving it, which helps so many people in the community and the environment so much.”
The project includes a 70-mile 345kV generation tie line between the Shortgrass and Cheyenne Ridge substation in Lincoln County.
The line is a one-way connection to the electric grid, Xcel said.
