This year is set to be the greenest on record for the UK in terms of electricity generation, according to National Grid ESO data.
Its data shows that 2020 experienced the highest decarbonisation of electricity with an average of 181gCO2 KWh from January to November, a 66% drop from 2013’s figure of 529CO2 KWh.
Energy usage from carbon intense sources has fallen in the past seven years with National Grid reporting levels of 215CO2 KWh in 2019.
Wind and solar power have been leading the reduction in carbon intensity with the lowest levels recorded in May and October.
However, there is still some way to go to meet the 2030 target of an average of 100gCO2 Kwh.
The Boxing Day surge in wind energy caused by Storm Bella that led to UK turbines generating more than half the UK’s electricity for the first time on record was not included in the data.
