A ComRes survey has found 85% of British adults are in favour of price support for renewables including onshore wind and solar.
The survey for the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit showed less than 30% think gas power should be subsidised, the same proportion as for nuclear, with 19% wanting support for coal.
The poll also revealed growing support for the government’s commitment to phase out coal-fired power stations.
Some 65% of Britons back an end to coal use up from 58% in 2015.
Renewables, either wind or solar, are the top choices for replacing coal, with 42% choosing one or other as their preferred technology.
Nuclear is backed by 16% and gas by 3%.
“This survey demolishes any claim that the public are resistant to encouraging energy sources such as wind and solar,” said ComRes chairman Andrew Hawkins.
“Even in cash-strapped times, an overwhelming majority want renewable energies to have financial support.”
ComRes interviewed 2,045 British adults online between 1 and 2 February.
