EDF Renewables and TransAlta Corporation were among the winners in the Canadian province of Alberta’s renewables tender which rewarded five wind farms totalling 763MW.
The successful projects included TransAlta’s 207MW Windrise development, south-west of Fort MacLeod, and EDF and Kania First Nation’s 202MW Cypress plant, near Medicine Hat.
Potentia Renewables won with two projects. The 193MW Jenner and 113MW Stirling wind farms, near Brooks and Lethbridge, respectively.
Jenner is being developed in partnership with Paul First Nation and Greengate Power.
Capstone Infrastructure Corporation and Sawridge First Nation secured the fifth project, the 48MW Buffalo Atlee facility near Brooks.
Construction is expected to start in 2020 at all the wind farms, with commercial operations by mid-2021.
Alberta said about 1000 jobs will be created by the projects.
The weight average price for the wind farms was C$39 (€26) a megawatt-hour.
Alberta minister of environment and parks Shannon Phillips said: “Our made-in-Alberta plan is working to once again turn Alberta’s renewable energy resources into new jobs and investment in communities across the province, while producing the lowest-cost power available for Albertans.
“These major private investments in southern Alberta wind projects also bring important professional service opportunities to downtown Calgary and new economic opportunities for Indigenous communities, making it a win-win for all Albertans.”
