A consortium project gathering 40 partners from nine Baltic Sea region countries with the aim of establish a green hydrogen industry targeting 100,000 tonnes annually, begins in June.
BalticSeaH2, supported with €33m in funding, including from the EU, is being led by Finnish CLIC Innovation, while Gasgrid Finland is a co-coordinator for the project.
The consortium in the five-year project includes partners from nine Baltic Sea region countries: Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
It aims to build the first significant, cross-border hydrogen valley in Europe where the main valley is between southern Finland and Estonia.
The goal is to create an integrated hydrogen economy around the Baltic Sea to enable self-sufficiency of energy and minimise carbon emissions from different industries.
BalticSeaH2 will enable 25 demonstration and investment cases across the different sectors of hydrogen economy.
The hydrogen and its derivatives can be utilised or sold by different industries brought together by the project.
One of the partners, Finnish energy company Helen, intends to produce green hydrogen with a PEM electrolyser.
The first pilot plant should be running by 2024 and serve primarily heavy transport.
