Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has rubbished Prime Minister David Cameron’s “greenest ever government” claim – stating he has forgotten about the “thousands of jobs” he is cutting.
Corbyn stated the UK had the largest gap to close to achieve its 2020 EU binding renewable energy target, and labelled the Conservative-led government as “going back on the progress” that the UK has made in the last three years.
Speaking in the House of Commons he said: “The UK government within the last couple of months has hit solar with cuts, scrapped the green deal, hit onshore wind and put in new tax measures for renewables. It is no wonder the UK has been criticised for going backwards.”
PM David Cameron hit back saying: “The label of the greenest government ever is a fact, we have trebled renewable deployment within the last Parliament which is more than Labour can say.
“As for solar, it is right we have to concentrate on bill payers. As the cost of manufacturing goes down, so must subsidies.”
Corbyn hit back saying: “Your solar claims will do nothing to help those thousands of people in the solar business losing their jobs before Christmas.”
The pair have clashed during Prime Ministers Questions which is taking place now, before the Comprehensive Spending Review is announced at 12.30pm.
