Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Secretary Alok Sharma has paid tribute to the entire national energy sector in ensuring security of supply during the coronavirus pandemic.
In a letter published today Sharma thanked the industry for “keeping our most critical infrastructure operating safely and securely, and for making sure homes and businesses right across the UK are receiving the energy they need”.
“The work you are doing around the clock to maintain our energy system is vital: keeping fuel flowing, the lights on, our buildings heated and cooled, and ensuring we have access to hot water.”
Sharma described this work as an essential part of the UK’s response to COVID-19.
Sharma’s letter continued: “During these challenging times, you are enabling essential services to continue to keep the public safe, including the most vulnerable in our society.
“As you know, the government’s priority is saving lives and we have advised that where possible, people should stay at home.
“However, I know many of you are required to continue to travel to work to keep these important services operating.
“We recently provided further advice on social distancing in the workplace during coronavirus, which is designed to help you stay safe.”
Based on the latest scientific evidence the government will regularly review this and other guidance and publish it at www.gov.uk.
“I realise this will be challenging for you personally, however you are contributing to the resilience of our nation and I am grateful for the enormous efforts you are making at this testing time,” Sharma said.
