The UK government has moved to categorise the electricity industry as a “critical sector” during the COVID-19 emergency.
The designation will mean workers can continue to fulfil their roles, including prioritisation for childcare.
The government said if workers think they fall within the categories they should confirm with their employer that, based on their business continuity arrangements, their specific role is necessary for the continuation of this essential public service.
If a school is closed, workers are asked to contact their local authority, which will seek to redirect people to a local school that children can attend.
Union GMB said the move, which also recognises staff in other key sectors, reveals the “hidden army” that is tackling the Coronavirus pandemic.
Tim Roache, GMB General Secretary said: “Those who are keeping the lights on, the taps running, producing, stocking and delivering food are an indispensable hidden army in the fight against this virus.
“All essential workers who are risking their own health to keep our country running must get proper protective equipment without hesitation and they must know that they will get full pay if they have to self-isolate or become sick.
“Ministers need to support employers to do the right thing – there can be no cutting corners.”
He added: “There are still details to work through to ensure all essential workers are supported – and we stand ready to work closely with the Government to address any and all issues as they emerge.”
