Duke Energy is to buy pig and poultry waste from a facility planned for North Carolina and use the captured methane gas to generate electricity at four power stations.
Carbon Cycle Energy will build and own the facility, where the waste will be treated and gas injected into pipes.
The methane will then be used at Duke’s Buck and Dan River steam stations in Rowan County and Rockingham County respectively, and the HF Lee Station and Sutton combined cycle plants in Wayne County and New Hanover County.
Carbon Cycle Energy chief executive officer James Powell said: “We still have additional work to do with licensing, local regulations and completing our organic waste supply chain. But having a confirmed buyer like Duke Energy is a major step.”
Duke Energy filed on 18 March registration statements and additional information related to the plants with the North Carolina Utilities Commission.
Under the state’s renewable energy portfolio standards requirements, this must be done for plants that will consume and generate new renewable energy.
