Atlas Renewable Energy has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) a battery energy storage system (BESS) it is developing with the Chilean company COPEC.
The PPA is for 15 years.
The battery system will be installed next to Atlas’ Sol del Desierto solar plant, located in the commune of Maria Elena in the Antofagasta region.
BESS del Desierto will be one of the largest energy storage projects in Chile and Latin America, with an installed capacity of 200MW and a storage capacity of 800 megawatt hours.
The asset will be implemented as a standalone battery.
“This deal marks our expansion into battery energy storage technology, establishing Atlas as an early adopter in Latin America,” said Atlas Renewable Energy chief executive Carlos Barrera.
“It demonstrates our commitment to innovative energy solutions and strengthens our position as a leader in sustainable technology for the region’s energy transition.
“The BESS del Desierto project is a key part of our strategy to enhance energy reliability in the region through advanced solar resource utilisation and offer customised energy solutions to our clients.`’
