Dutch company Alfen has built a 3MW energy storage system using BMW car batteries at Nuon’s Prinses Alexia wind farm in the Netherlands.
The companies said that they plan to expand the system to 12MW “over the coming period”.
The system stores surplus electricity that sometimes the grid does not have the capacity to absorb so that it can be used when the grid requires the power at a later moment in time.
It is Alfen’s second energy storage project linked to a wind farm, with a 1MW system having been set up at Giessenwind in May.
Nuon project manager Boudewijn Tjeertes said: “This will enable us to make flexible use of renewable energy without wasting energy.
“And we are looking further: for example, we are planning to install a battery in residential areas with many houses with rooftop solar.”
