Siemens and Engie Deutschland are partnering on a 12.5MW battery storage project at the Pfreimd pumped hydro plant in Bavaria.
The partners said the batteries will “complement” the existing facilities of the pumped storage power station to help balance the energy supply.
Siemens will provide the Siestorage system consisting of lithium-ion batteries in container units by the end of 2017. It will also provide inverters, switchgear and transformers to connect the project to the grid.
Siemens medium voltage and systems business unit chief executive Stephan May said: “This battery storage system will be one of the largest systems Siemens has supplied so far.”
