Firstway Energy has secured planning permission for a 100MW battery energy storage system in Willington, Derbyshire.
The project marks the company’s sixth planning approval in eight months and brings its consented portfolio to 600MW.
Located adjacent to the Willington substation, the scheme will provide grid balancing services and store enough electricity to power more than 300,000 homes for two hours.
“We are delighted to receive approval for this important project and would like to thank the authorities for recognising the ever-increasing importance and need for energy storage facilities,” said Nathan Stevenson, managing director at Firstway Energy.
The company said the site will help deliver on the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 goals by supporting a net-zero electricity system.
Firstway worked with South Derbyshire planning officers and local stakeholders during the application process.
Stevenson said: “We are looking forward to working with the National Energy Grid System Operator and National Grid Electricity Distribution in accelerating the grid connection, as the site will benefit from a ‘Protected’ Gate 2A grid connection.”
