Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), part of Jameel Energy, has partnered with AMPTank Energy to deliver the 100MW/200MWh SIMO battery storage project in Finland.
Located near Fingrid’s Simojoki substation in Lapland, SIMO marks the second phase of FRV’s pioneering storage development, following the initial 30MW/60MWh installation.
Once operational, the two phases will make SIMO one of Finland’s largest battery energy storage systems, designed to stabilise the grid and enable greater renewable penetration north of the Arctic Circle.
The 200MWh system will use 24 Sungrow PowerTitan batteries in phase one and 34 Huawei Luna containers in phase two, covering an area of 1.2 hectares.
The project is financed through a term loan provided by Kommunalkredit Austria, which acted as sole coordinating and underwriting entity.
“This project represents a key milestone in the consolidation of our energy storage strategy,” said David Menéndez, chief executive of FRV Energy Storage.
“SIMO will help strengthen grid stability and enable greater integration of renewable energy into a strategic European market such as Finland.”
FRV UK managing director Tom Guilfoyle added: “The collaboration with Kommunalkredit and the commitment of all partners and stakeholders has been instrumental in bringing this project forward. SIMO reinforces our position as a benchmark in storage, especially in the Nordic region.”
Neal Kumar, president of AMPTank AG, said the partnership “allows us to develop BESS projects at scale and contribute to the EU’s renewable energy targets”, while Kommunalkredit head of banking Volker Kruse added that SIMO “will play a key role in advancing Finland’s ambitious decarbonisation targets”.
