Law firm Herbert Smith Freehills advised Infigen on the construction contracts for a 25MW Tesla battery at the 278.5MW Lake Bonney wind farm in South Australia.
It also advised on funding deals for the A$38m project – whereby the state government and renewable energy agency Arena are each providing A$5m in grants.
Infigen will build and operate the facility which will be connected to the grid via the Mayurra substation near Mount Gambier in the state’s south east.
The legal team was led by partner Dan Zador, with suppport from solicitors Oliver Tod and Salvador Jose.
Zador said: “Utility scale batteries are likely to be an increasingly important part of the energy mix into the future; both generators and network service providers have much to gain from this technology.
“The Lake Bonney BESS is one of a few early examples of the technology being deployed in Australia, and will provide crucial stability and flexibility to an increasingly complex energy landscape.”
