Pivot Power awards two UK storage contracts

Pivot Power awards two UK storage contracts

Fulcrum Group subsidiary Maintech Power has secured a specialist high voltage electrical maintenance contract with Pivot Power, part of EDF Renewables, for two UK projects.

Maintech Power will provide ongoing electrical maintenance services for two new 50MW battery storage facilities located in Kent and Oxford, which are connected to National Grid’s high voltage transmission network.

The batteries will share their grid connection with high volume power connections for mass-scale, rapid EV charging.

The first of these will be installed in Oxford, where Pivot Power is leading Energy Superhub Oxford, a project to accelerate the city’s zero carbon journey.

The 50MW battery storage facilities will provide essential flexibility to future-proof the UK’s electricity system and support more intermittent renewable generation, helping the country accelerate a net-zero future.

The 50MW lithium-ion batteries will respond in milliseconds to fluctuations in electricity supply and demand, charging or discharging to keep the system stable.

These are the first projects completed as part of Pivot Power’s programme to develop, own and operate up to 2GW of grid-scale energy storage and high-volume power connections that are directly connected to the UK high-voltage transmission system.

This contract is the latest in a series secured by Maintech Power in support of low carbon energy production and usage.

Maintech Power managing director Richard Jump said: “Pivot Power is developing innovative solutions for the storage and use of clean electricity, which we fully support as part of our commitment to contribute towards the UK’s journey to net-zero.

“Our specialist Maintech engineers are ideally placed to ensure that the ambitions of this project to provide essential flexibility, with the increased use of renewable electricity, can be fulfilled and ensure that it can operate at maximum efficiency.”
