Qair has secured planning approval for a 50MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Aberdeenshire.
Green Switch Capital, part of the Qair Group, has received planning permission for the facility at Middleton Farm, near Potterton.
The project was approved by Aberdeenshire Council, with planning support provided by Locogen.
Middleton Farm Energy Storage Facility will cover approximately 1.3 hectares and enable the import and export of up to 49.9MW of electricity to the local grid network.
The facility will play a key role in supporting grid stability and improving the efficiency of renewable energy generation during periods of high demand.
As part of the project’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the development will include biodiversity enhancements such as tree and scrub planting.
A comprehensive landscaping plan and transport strategy are also in place to reduce impacts on residents and local wildlife.
Head of Scottish development at Qair UK Pete McLaren said: “This is a landmark moment for Qair UK as we expand into standalone energy storage.
“Battery storage is critical to unlocking the full potential of renewables in the UK, and we’re proud to contribute to a more resilient and flexible energy system.”
The approval marks Qair UK’s first consented standalone battery project, adding to over 140MW of solar capacity approved across the UK in the last 18 months.
