ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) has won the right to build a 50MW energy storage system at the UK’s biggest onshore wind farm, the 539MW Whitelee project in East Renfrewshire.
Installation work is expected to start early next year with the facility fully operational by the end of 2020, the company said.
The Glasgow developer filed Section 36 paperwork with Scottish ministers in January to build the lithium-ion scheme that would connect to the existing Ardochrig substation.
In a statement, SPR said the storage system would be used to provide reactive power and frequency response to National Grid.
The battery will also enhance the capability of storing excess energy from wind generation at times when demand is low or wind is high, it added.
“By integrating storage technologies with onshore wind, we are blowing away one of the myths about renewable generation not being available when you need it,” said ScottishPower chief executive Keith Anderson.
“If we are to meet the bold target of net zero by 2050 and deliver the decarbonisation of our economy, transport and heating systems, large battery storage facilities such as this along with more wind farms like Whitelee are crucial.”
