Eon has completed architectural works at the Blackburn Meadows biomass plant in Sheffield.
The German energy company has worked with architectural partner BDP to create what it said is a “landmark structure to signify the gateway in and out of Sheffield”.
Much of the renewable plant’s exterior is clad in black profiled steel and dark brick to reflect the industrial heritage of the area.
This material is in contrast to the plant’s orange polycarbonate enclosure that houses the boilers and is illuminated internally at night.
Blackburn Meadows also includes green roofs on the plant’s visitor centre and landscaping to the south of the site, promoting biodiversity and attracting a variety of wildlife.
Eon head of business heat & power solutions Mike Wake said: “Blackburn Meadows is a shining example of the continued investment we’re making in renewable energy generation in the UK.”
Eon will also put in place a £25,000 a year community benefit fund to support local projects throughout the lifetime of Blackburn Meadows.
