Facebook was the largest buyer of renewable energy in the US in 2019, according to research by the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA).
REBA said Facebook procured 1.546GW of the 9.33GW sold last year, with Google coming in second with 1.107GW.
AT&T came in third place buying 960MW, followed by Microsoft with 624MW and T-Mobile with 581MW.
Walmart, Amazon, Ball Corporation, McDonald’s and Honda made up the remaining companies in the top 10 clean buyers list last year.
The 2019 top 10 list was calculated through REBA’s Deal Tracker, which analyses historic renewable energy market trends, as well as the annual number and volume of deals announced in the US.
The Deal Tracker is updated quarterly and includes publicly announced contracted capacity of corporate power purchase agreements, green power purchases, green tariffs and outright project ownership in the country since 2015.
REBA chief executive Miranda Ballentine said: “Well over half of all energy consumption comes from the commercial and industrial sector, so it is increasingly important that large energy buyers are identifying opportunities to reduce emissions.
“The leaders on our list understand that as part of their environmental, social and governance planning, integrating renewable energy is one of the most significant ways to work toward a zero-carbon future while contributing to local economies.”
