Gaelectric has lodged a planning application for its 330MW Islandmagee compressed air energy storage system in Northern Ireland.
The Dublin company said today an environmental impact statement for the £300m Antrim storage project, which has been in development for over a decade, has also been filed.
The plant, if consented, will be located between the Ballyumford power station and the Moyle Interconnector at Islandmagee, some 7km south-east of Larne in Northern Ireland where a 268MW plant was initially proposed.
It will provide stored electricity to the grid for up to six hours from natural salt caverns drilled deep underground.
Gaelectric chief executive Brendan McGrath (pictured) said the submission was the culmination of over 10 years of work by the project team.
“We have also had a positive and constructive engagement with the community of Larne and Islandmagee, and their representatives, around the project,” he said.
“We now move forward to the statutory phase of the planning process. I expect that the application and Environment Statement will shortly become available to the public through the Northern Ireland planning portal and at official consultation venues.”
