A new Spanish utility has been set up which will focus on developing renewables in the country’s north-west region.
Resources of Galicia (RDG) is owned by the Government of Galicia and 33 private companies that contribute to the GDP of this region more than €10.5m a year, in addition to maintaining more than 21,000 direct jobs.
The new company represents an “ambitious commitment” that aims to increase the energy autonomy of Galicia in particular and Europe in general.
It will promote the sustainable use of natural resources, to allow the purchase of electricity at competitive prices in the areas closest to the energy sources, to stimulate self-consumption and to help stimulate growth in rural areas.
RDG will seek to ensure that energy development is equitable and benefits the economic fabric and progress of a region located in the north-west of Spain, which has an “extraordinary natural wealth that translates into a multitude of energy-generating resources, such as wind and water, among others”.
These objectives will be achieved by RDG through measures such as seeking support
for the projects among the local communities in which they are located, facilitating the existence of a market under equal conditions for all participants regardless of their business volume and acting as a catalyst for the implementation of the future Natural Resources Law.
Companies with a shareholding in RDG include Abanca and Megasa and Finsa, which are the third and fourth biggest exporters Galicia, plus Copasa, Valtalia, ARP Global, Severiano Castro e Hijos, Integria Energía, Empresas, Eroxona, Sertogal and Twinleads, all partners of Cluergal, and Wind1000.
