US utility Georgia Power plans to add 525MW of renewable generation to the company’s portfolio by 2019.
The proposal includes up to 425MW of utility-scale solar, wind and biomass, according to the utility’s integrated resource plan filed with state regulators. The strategy also includes a carve-out for distributed solar resources.
Georgia Power expects to submit a detailed request for proposals in September 2016. Developers may submit projects up to 210MW with a 2018 commercial operation date and up to 215MW with a 2019 COD. The power purchase agreement will be for a term up to 30 years.
The competitive bidding process is expected to provide energy savings to customers.
“As we navigate the changing energy and environmental landscape, striking the right balance between reliability and affordability is crucial to protecting our customers,” said Georgia Power senior VP and senior production officer John Pemberton.
The Georgia Public Service Commission will hold public hearings and is expected to vote on the IRP request this summer.
