German builder wins electrolyser job with Luxcara

Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub has appointed Kraftanlagen Energies & Services to deliver the Balance of Plant works for its 100MW electrolysis project at the former Moorburg coal power plant site.

The hub is a consortium between Luxcara and Hamburger Energiewerke and is among the first large-scale green hydrogen projects in Germany.

The contract covers planning, delivery and construction of supporting technical and supply facilities, including power distribution, water treatment, cooling and compressor stations, and connections to the hydrogen network and trailer loading station.

Construction work will begin in early 2026 with commissioning of the infrastructure scheduled for the second half of 2027.

The facilities will support integration of the 100MW Siemens Energy electrolyser and enable flexible hydrogen transport options.

Preparatory work on the 16,000-square-metre site began in June to stabilise the subsoil.

The hub aims to produce around 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually for customers through the HH-WIN distribution network and trailer station.

Holger Matthiesen, managing director at Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub and director of offshore wind and green hydrogen at Luxcara, said Kraftanlagen’s expertise will help realise this pioneering project for Hamburg’s hydrogen economy.

Heinrich Dauer, head of the energy business unit at Kraftanlagen, said the company is proud to support the hub in implementing the project and will draw on its experience in power plant construction to ensure success.
