Germany will oppose plans to compromise priority dispatch for renewables, if proposed by the EU as part of an amended renewable energy directive expected to be tabled later this year.
“We notified our new renewable energy law EEG this year, and the European Commission cleared it, including priority dispatch for renewables,” German Energy Minister Sigmar Gabriel told Windenergy 2016 in Hamburg.
“I would be surprised if the European Commission would now table a contrary proposal and, if so, we would oppose it,” he added.
European Commission official Maros Sefcovic said: “As renewable energy is becoming more and more competitive, we want to achieve fair competition.” Sefcovic heads up the EU’s energy union efforts.
Industry group WindEurope has previously said that in mature markets with high levels of wind power “future regulatory frameworks and power market design can consider increased exposure of wind generators to market risks, including progressively phasing out priority dispatch”.
