Germany has ratified the Paris Agreement on climate change, which was agreed at the UN’s COP21 meeting in the French capital last December.
The Bundestag, the lower of house of parliament, approved the agreement on Thursday, followed by its counterparts in upper house Bundesrat on Friday.
Germany’s law on the Paris Agreement is likely to enter force in early October, once the country’s Federal President has signed the respective law and it is published in the Federal Gazette.
The Paris agreement is “a great sign of hope” in the fight against global warming, German Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks said.
The Paris Agreement committed the world to trying to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
