Wind power generation in Germany rose by 27% year-on-year to just over 42 billion kWh in the first quarter of 2026.
The Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien said the increase was based on analysis of data from the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity.
The organisation added that onshore wind generation grew by 23.1% to 33.1 billion kWh, while offshore output climbed 44.8% to 9.7 billion kWh.
The growth was driven by the expansion of more than 5000MW of new wind capacity in 2025 and more favourable wind conditions in early 2026.
Average electricity prices fell to 10.2 cents per kWh from January to March, down from 11.2 cents per kWh in the same period last year.
“The sharp increase in wind power generation has significantly eased the electricity market,” said Norbert Allnoch, chief executive officer of IWR.
“Without this growth, Germany would have had to rely more heavily on comparatively expensive gas-fired power plants – with correspondingly higher stock exchange electricity prices.”
