German system operator 50Hertz and its Danish counterpart Energinet have inaugurated the Kriegers Flak combined grid solution.
The hybrid offshore interconnector connects two transformer platforms in the Baltic Sea with each other and with the existing land connections of offshore wind farms.
Two 25km submarine cables, each with an output of around 200MW, between the Baltic 2 and Kriegers Flak transformer platforms link the two grid connection systems.
It enables the solution to route offshore wind power to Denmark or Germany and also to use it for cross-border power trading.
Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier, the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Supply, Dan Jørgensen, and the EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, praised the project at the official inauguration ceremony, which took place in Berlin.
50Hertz chief executive Stefan Kapferer said: “With this project, 50Hertz and Energinet are doing pioneering work in the efficient integration of offshore wind farms into the cross-border European electricity market.
“It gives us several options to keep the frequency and voltage in our transmission networks at all times, to deal with the integration of renewable energies even more flexibly and to increase the stability of the overall system.
“The CGS is therefore an important component in our strategy of being able to cover the electricity demand in our grid area up to 2032, calculated over the year, to 100 percent from renewable energies.”
