50Hertz reveals SuedOstLink details

German transmission system operator 50Hertz has revealed details of part of the SuedOstLink grid connection between Eisenberg in the region of Thuringia and the border with Bavaria.

The TSO, which presented the proposal to specialist authorities and associations in Gera today, said a planning application will soon be made to the federal network agency.

SuedOstLink is a planned 540km direct current connection between Saxony-Anhalt and Bavaria that will bring wind power generated in the north of the country to consumers in the south.

Construction is planned to start in 2022, with commissioning scheduled for 2025.

50Hertz is responsible for the northern part, with the southern, Bavarian part, the responsibility of TSO TenneT.

50Hertz SuedOstLink project manager Mark Pazmandy said: “The fact that we are now presenting concrete plans for the course of the underground cables in Thuringia and Saxony shows the progress in this network expansion project, which is important for the energy transition.

“The upcoming plan approval procedure is about further elaborating the exact course of the line as well as technical and structural aspects.

“In doing so, we continually involve public authorities, associations and citizens.”

50Hertz is also planning four information events from 4pm to 7pm on 26 November in Greiz, in Eisenberg on 27 November, Weida on 2 December and on 3 December in the Rosenbach district of Leubnitz.
