Amprion Offshore will take over the former RWE power plant site in Ibbenbüren to build a converter station for the offshore grid connection system BalWin2.
With the BalWin2 offshore grid connection system, Amprion is planning the first connection of offshore wind farms in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The connection will use DC technology.
As the transmission network in Germany is mainly AC technology, the converter station is used near the so-called grid connection point (Westerkappeln substation) to convert the incoming direct current into alternating current so that it can be fed into the transmission grid.
Amprion has run an extensive process for finding a location for the converter station.
Amprion’s chosen site, which was a coal power plant in Ibbenbüren, is owned by the Hagedorn group of companies which have agreed to sell it to Amprion.
