Ingeteam has been awarded a contract for the supply of four synchronous condensers for two plants to stabilise the UK power grid.
The contract has been awarded by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners and its development partner Welsh Power as part of Phase 2 of the NOA Stability Pathfinder Project for connection to the transmission network with National Grid ESO.
Ingeteam’s solution is designed to help electricity operators address stability of the existing electricity infrastructure, as more variable renewables generation is plugged into the grid.
The projects will be installed at Thurso South and Neilston and will consist of two plants equipped with four INDARCOM synchronous condensers and connected to the Scottish transmission grid.
The INDARCOM Synchronous condensers will be manufactured by Ingeteam at its Beasain plant in Spain.
This technology is based on synchronous generation with a rotating electrical machine that operates in a similar way to the generators used in conventional coal or gas plants, providing short-circuit power and inertia to support the integration of renewable energy into the grid.
It also allows reactive power to be compensated dynamically and quickly, thereby contributing to grid stability and increasing the efficiency of the electricity system.
A consortium led by Ingeteam has been awarded the contract for the EPC plants and will be responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of both plants.
