Prysmian Group has developed and tested a new P-Laser 600kV cable insulation system for high voltage DC applications.
The Italian company said the technology has been developed using an in-house developed thermoplastic material – known as high performance thermoplastic elastomer (HPTE).
It said HPTE permits more efficient cable production with lower environmental impacts than traditional XLPE, where the manufacture is performed in a single and continuous process.
The new technology does not require a chemical reaction during manufacture to achieve the material properties required for the long-term electrical integrity of HVDC insulation systems, Prysmian said.
The P-Laser system is fully compatible with existing cable and accessory technologies for use underground or subsea, it added.
