Siemens and Sumitomo Electric have agreed to collaborate in the field of high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, combining their technologies.
The partnership aims to provide optimise solutions to enhance the performance of the power links, the companies said.
Siemens develops DC converter technology while Sumitomo produces HVDC cables with cross- linked polyethylene insulation.
The companies have also won a $520m order from the Power Grid Corporation of India to supply a 200km HVDC transmission system.
The power link will India’s first to feature so-called voltage-sourced converter technology, according to the partners. It is scheduled to go into operation in the first half of 2020.
“We are pleased to announce this innovative partnership which accommodates the needs of the growing HVDC transmission system market,” Sumitomo managing executive officer Masaki Shirayama said.
“We believe this cooperation between technology leaders, Siemens and Sumitomo Electric, will strengthen both companies’ capability to provide state-of-the-art HVDC solutions to customers worldwide.”
