Siemens has developed a new frequency stabiliser that aims to compensate for voltage and frequency fluctuations in milliseconds.
The SVC Plus FS can feed reactive power needed for stable grid operation in less than 50 milliseconds, the German company said.
The frequency stabiliser stores up to 200MW of electricity in supercapacitors and can transfer the power to the grid to maintain stability, it added.
“This automatic procedure is triggered whenever the voltage or frequency exceeds or drops below certain limits,” Siemens said.
The system is important for grids with volatile feeds such from renewable energy sources, it added.
Siemens Transmission Solutions head of product lifecycle management Alexander Rentschler said: “The solution makes the grid more robust, increases its inertia, and thus builds a bridge for the energy transition.”
