The Northconnect power link between Scotland and Norway has been awarded a €10m grant from the European Union.
The financing will part fund the development phase of the £1.3bn project to integrate renewable energy sources in both countries through a 650km underwater cable.
Funds will come from the Connecting Europe Facility, the EU’s support programme for infrastructure.
NorthConnect is jointly owned by Swedish utility Vattenfall and three Norwegian energy companies, E-CO Energi, Agder Energi and Lyse. They aim to start operations in 2022.
“The decision demonstrates that the European Union considers the NorthConnect Project important to achieving the strategic goals of increasing security of energy supply, and contributing to sustainable development by integrating renewable energy sources across the EU,” deputy project manager Richard Blanchfield said.
