Andritz has secured a major contract from Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) to rehabilitate Mozambique’s largest hydropower plant.
The order covers the 2075MW Cahora Bassa facility on the Zambezi River, one of Africa’s largest hydropower plants and a key energy provider for Mozambique and neighbouring countries.
The contract, valued in the mid-three-digit million-euro range, was booked in Andritz’s fourth-quarter 2024 order intake.
Under the REABSUL 2 rehabilitation project, Andritz will supply five new 480MVA generators, five new Francis turbine runners, and upgrade the plant’s control and protection systems.
The scope also includes design, engineering, manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning of the new high-efficiency equipment.
Once completed, the upgrade will increase the capacity of each turbine by more than 4%, bringing output to 433MW per unit.
The first three years of the project will involve preparation, design and manufacturing of the new equipment, along with site infrastructure upgrades.
Unit replacements will then take place one by one while keeping the remaining units operational, requiring careful coordination with HCB’s parallel rehabilitation of the Songo Converter Substation.
Andritz said it is committed to supporting Mozambique’s hydropower market and ensuring the region’s renewable energy supply for decades to come.
