Iberdrola has awarded a €140m contract to Austrian company Andritz Hydro to supply electromechanical equipment and penstock for the 880MW Gouvães pumped storage hydro power plant in Portugal.
The contract comprises the design, manufacture, supply and supervision of the installation of the complete electro- and hydro-mechanical equipment – including reversible pump turbines, generator motors and electrical power systems.
It also includes the design, manufacture, supply and installation of a penstock of about 12,000 tonnes, an average diameter of about 5.4 metres and a length of 2.5km.
The project is part of the 1.158GW Alto Tâmega hydro scheme, which will consist of three large dams – Gouvães, Alto Tâmega and Daivões.
Iberdrola said it has already started the construction work for the complex, which is expected to be commissioned between 2021 and 2023, on the River Tâmega in Northern Portugal.
The total investment amounts to some €1.56bn, Iberdrola said.
The project will create an estimated 3500 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs during construction, it added.
