The joint venture between bp and Iberdrola has reached the final phase of construction of a 25MW green hydrogen plant in Castellón, Spain.

The project, developed through Castellón Green Hydrogen S.L., will be the largest green hydrogen plant in operation in Spain.

The plant has reached 90% completion of its assembly phase and 100% of equipment is now on site, including the electrolyser system supplied by Plug Power.

Testing to monitor the operation and performance of the equipment is scheduled to begin in May 2026.

The project has an investment of more than €70m and is jointly developed by bp and Iberdrola España, which hold equal stakes in the venture.

The 25MW electrolyser will be powered through a power purchase agreement with Iberdrola using renewable electricity from photovoltaic and wind farms.

The facility is expected to produce about 2800 tonnes of green hydrogen each year to replace part of the grey hydrogen currently used at the bp refinery in Castellón.

This is expected to avoid the emission of around 23,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Carolina Mesa, vice president of hydrogen for Europe and MENA at bp, said: “These developments are great news for the Spanish energy sector.”

Mesa said: “It reflects tangible progress in a key industrial decarbonisation project and consolidates the bp refinery in Castellón as a benchmark in the country”.

Julio Castro, chief executive of Iberdrola Energía Sostenible España, said: “This project is a real example of the electrification of industry, which reducesCO2 emissions and strengthens the security of energy supply.”

Castro said: “This plant will be powered by 200 GWh/year of renewable energy from our wind farms and photovoltaic plants in Spain.”
