Belgian hydro company Turbulent has won one of the two $100,000 prizes awarded at the Ocean Exchange competition in the US.
The start-up, one of 15 finalists, said it has received the WWL Orcelle award for its technique to deliver affordable renewable energy.
Turbulent offers micro hydropower plants with 5 to 100kw to harness renewable energy from low head streams.
The prize recognises technologies that make shipping and logistics more sustainable by advancing zero emissions.
The Ocean Exchange is an international platform that works to accelerate the adoption by industry of innovations that positively impact environments, economies and health. It held its sixth annual event last week in Georgia.
“We’re thrilled to win this award and be recognised at an international level for our contributions to advancing zero emission technologies,” Turbulent co-founder Jasper Verreydt said. “Our plan is to use the $100,000 to further scale our business in Chile.”
