Voith is to provide service and operations consultancy for the Ethiopian hydropower plant Gilgel Gibe 2.
The main scope of the two-year contract is to optimise energy production at the plant.
This will be achieved by modernising of the maintenance systems, implementing digital solutions and providing knowledge transfer through special training programmes, Voith said.
All the local activities will be exclusively provided by Ethiopian Voith experts, the company said.
Gilgel Gibe 2 is located about 300km south-east of the Ethiopian capital Addis Abeba.
Voith supplied Gilgel Gibe 2 with four Pelton turbines and generators, the entire mechanical and electrical equipment and also trained the plant operator’s staff.
Voith Hydro managing director Mark Claessen said: “Together with the plant operator Ethiopian Electric Power we want to utilize the whole potential of the hydropower plant Gilgel Gibe 2.
“We succeed in this by reducing unplanned downtimes and failures to a minimum.
“A stable and sustainable energy supply is the foundation for social and economic development in Ethiopia and many other African countries.”
The agreement was signed by the Ethiopian Minister of Water, Irrigation and Electricity Seleshi Bekele and Claessen at a G20 investment summit.
