Iberdrola has officially opened its new €150m green hydrogen plant in Puertollano, Spain.
The green hydrogen produced at Puertollano will be used by Fertiberia Group in its fertilizer plant, reducing its natural gas needs.
Fertiberia will become the first European fertilizer company to capitalise on green hydrogen’s potential on an industrial scale.
The plant opening was led by His Majesty the King of Spain.
The plant, which will produce up to 3000 tonnes of green hydrogen a year and avoid 78,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually, is the largest facility producing the clean fuel for industrial use in Europe, Iberdrola said.
The project also includes a new 100MW solar plant and a 20 megawatt-hour (MWh) lithium-ion battery storage system.
The PV plant will use bifacial modules that allow for higher energy production.
The design will enable the production of 156,000MWh of electricity a year, equivalent to supplying clean energy to more than 47,000 homes.
Iberdrola chairman and chief executive Ignacio Galan highlighted that the Puertollano project was part of the company’s strategy to invest in “all technologies that contribute to the decarbonization of the economy and increase energy independence”.
